Sabbath Still The Godfathers of Metal

Being born in 1980 I missed out on the early days of the genre of music I've come to love and be part of. Bands like Led Zepplin, The Beatles, and Black Sabbath all set the standard before I was born. And by the time I was old enough to discover them they all were broken up or no longer living. Reunions of the living bands were all but impossible. That is until this year with the reunion of Ozzy Osbourne and the other founding members, which allowed me and several to see and hear what we thought we might never hear.

Now I know a lot of you reading this are screaming "No Bill Ward so it's not a true reunion." While Bill Ward is not in Black Sabbath at the time I'm writing this the reality for me and many is 3 out of 4 original members is close enough considering Tony Iommi is battling cancer and Ozzy has abused drugs and alcohol in excess over the years. Add in their ages and we can all agree this is the best we can ask for considering circumstances.

From the first chords of "War Pigs" through the last chords of "Paranoid" everyone at the PNC Bank Arts Center saw and heard something half of us thought we'd never see while the other half were transported back to when they first heard Black Sabbath. All 17,000 and more together to see the band that took things in a direction no one had ever thought would go.

Geezer Butler played as if no time had been missed and age was merely a number. You could see he was enjoying every moment of it and feel it in ever note that pulsed out of his bass.

If none of us had heard that Tony Iommi had cancer you sure as hell would never had known from his playing. Yes he did stroll over to well placed fans every so often for a moment and his solos were more blues related then speed, he still played like the guitar legend we all respect him to be.

While Tommy Clufetos, Ozzy's normal drummer, was the odd man out of this line up he still found his way to fit in. He added and heavier and edgier sound to the band, you almost forget the Bill Ward situation. ALMOST, cause you yearn for that blues style of Bill Ward during "N.I.B" and "Black Sabbath".

Then of course there's Ozzy. He put so much energy into the night that I was amazed he had it in him. Yes he's only 64 but with everything he's put into his body over the years he looked like be was much older at times throughout the show. Age and substance abuse has effected him physically but not enough to hold him back from giving it his full effort. The majority of the night he was right on tempo and key as if nothing had changed for him. But a few times during "Snowblind" you could hear the note just wasn't there for him. While the classics, "Iron Man" and "Children of the Grave" were right on like many of us know them from years of listening to the albums.

Black Sabbath managed a show that gave us 4 songs from their latest album "13" as well as the classics and even deep cuts like "Dirty Women". Had it not been for all the smartphones being held up to take photos you might've forgotten that it was 2013 and thought it was the 1970s again.

Now we wait to see if we were part of history or will we get ones the chance to see Black Sabbath. Only time will tell that but I'm glad I got to see them and get a feel for what the world was like when metal music was first forged.

HUNTRESS Announce North American Tour Dates With Danzig!

HUNTRESS have confirmed they will be touring late summer with Danzig as he celebrates his 25th Anniversary with Doyle.  These tour dates kick off immediately following the band's run with the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, and Heavy MTL Festival in Montreal, Canada.  The tour starts August 13th in Bethlehem, PA, and runs through August 31st in Tempe, AZ.  A complete list of dates can be found below.

HUNTRESS vocalist Jill Janus commented on the upcoming tour with Danzig:

"HUNTRESS is honored and thrilled to be the opening act for Danzig's summer 25th anniversary tour with Doyle! I speak for all my bandmates when I say Danzig and the Misfits were immensely influential during our angsty teenage years. I'm taking a time machine back to high-five and freak out with my thirteen year old self! This rules!"

HUNTRESS has generated a massive amount of buzz since the release of their debut album Spell Eater in 2012. The follow up to last year's kill, Starbound Beast, has been released and is available now via Napalm Records. The album is available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon and in Best Buy stores in the US.

The band recently filmed their music video for "Zenith" from their new album Starbound Beast.  An exclusive trailer has been posted and can be viewed HEREThe spectacular video was directed by Phil Mucci, whose video for HIGH ON FIRE's "Fertile Green" was named best video of 2012 by Revolver. Look for the video to receive its exclusive premiere via Bloody Disgusting soon.

HUNTRESS are taking part in the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.  In addition to performing every day, vocalist Jill Janus will host the first ever Shred-Meister guitar competition.  Festival attendees can go to the Jägermeister tents on site and audition for a chance to shred for 10 seconds on the main stage. Each day, one of the 10 finalists will win a custom  Jägermeister guitar from Schecter, and the overall winner at the end of the tour will win a  custom Jägermeister full stack and head courtesy of Peavey Electronics.

Starbound Beast was recorded at Hobby Shop Studios in Los Angeles, CA, working with famed producer Zeuss (Shadows Fall, Hatebreed, Agnostic Front).  The artwork  for  Starbound Beast  was created once again by Vance Kelly (Slayer, Ghost B.C., Mastodon).

HUNTRESS was spawned from the preternatural union of Jill Janus with underground metal bands Professor and Dark Black. They thrive on thundering drums, heavy riffs, spectral solos and catchy choruses that come from the band's musical concoction of occult science and bong rips. HUNTRESS remains true to the roots of melodic heavy metal with a penchant for thrash, death and black metal.

HUNTRESS Hosting "Virtual Yard Sale" For Mayhem Festival Tour Support

HUNTRESS has generated a massive amount of buzz since the release of their debut album Spell Eater in 2012. The follow up to last year's kill is Starbound Beast, to be released on July 2nd during the band's run with the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. Huntress is about to embark on the biggest tour opportunity of their new career, as well as the most demanding and expensive. HUNTRESS has teamed up with fellow Mayhem brothers Battlecross to share the cost for a bus this summer, since their tour vans can't handle the extreme heat. And that is only the beginning of the financial strain for a young metal band with minimal tour support.

HUNTRESS has started an indiegogo (Virtual Yard Sale) campaign to ensure their participation in the festival. Check out their indiegogo page HERE, featuring enticing packages and unique collector items. Some of the perks offered are signed CD DigiPaks and Vinyl of their upcoming album Starbound Beast, and packages that feature tickets to Mayhem Festival plus hang outs with the band. Water balloon fights, parking lot BBQs and Astrological readings with Jill Janus are also offered up for sacrifice. Some of the most exclusive perks include the sword prop and red cloak from the "Eight of Swords" video, and Blake's 1979 Custom GMC Vandura. More items and unique opportunities will be added as well.

In more HUNTRESS related Mayhem news, vocalist Jill Janus will host the first ever Shred-Meister guitar competition.  Festival attendees can go to the Jägermeister tents on site and audition for a chance to shred for 10 seconds on the main stage. HUNTRESS has just revealed the first song off the new record titled "I Want to Fuck You to Death", co-written by Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. Legendary Guitarist ULI JON ROTH to Embark On 40th Anniversary North American Tour

German guitar legend ULI JON ROTH will be returning to North America for a special tour commemorating his 40th anniversary of joining THE SCORPIONS.

ULI plans on celebrating this anniversary with a one of a kind show that features an entire set of SCORPIONS material as well as selections from his extensive solo catalog. Every show on the tour will be recorded for a live album documenting this amazing milestone in ULI's career.

The tour is currently scheduled to kick off January 25th in Los Angeles, CA and runs through March 3rd in Los Angeles. More dates will be added in the coming days. Stay tuned to http://www.ulijonroth.com for the most up to date schedule.

ULI is looking forward to presenting this historical show to his North American fans:

"Celebrating my 40th anniversary of joining the band, we will play a full set of SCORPIONS songs alongside my more recent material. We will feature several songs from each of the albums that I played on, including some, which have not been played live before. I'm really looking forward to it. Hope to see you there!"

Because of his ground-breaking, highly innovative and distinctive trademark guitar work, ULI is widely regarded as being one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

As one of the main founding members of THE SCORPIONS, ULI wrote much of the material for the bands - by now legendary - first five albums, which include the hugely successful live album "Tokyo Tapes". These early SCORPIONS years with ULI, Klaus and Rudolf as the nucleus, were absolutely essential in shaping what is now considered the classic SCORPIONS sound.

ULI is regarded as a significant influence by many notable guitar players, including, but not limited to Slash, Eddie Van Halen Joe Satriani, Kirk Hammett, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen. Having collaborated and shared the stage with the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins, Deep Purple, Brian May, Jack Bruce, UFO, and many others, ULI continues to inspire and pave the way for musicians and fans alike.

After his departure from THE SCORPIONS, ULI JON ROTH embarked on a successful career as a solo artist, producing highly influential albums with his band Electric Sun, as well as performing classical concertos with orchestras.

ULI also invented his own instrument the legendary 6-octave Sky Guitar, which is currently on the market as a limited Edition signature model.

In addition to his 40th Anniversary shows, ULI will also be offering his world renowned Sky Academy Seminars while he is on the road in North America. These introductory seminars are not just aimed at guitarists, but fans and even non-musicians may well find plenty to gain from Uli's unique way of talking about some of the deeper mysteries of music. For some people Sky Academy has even been a life-changing experience, because ULI's teaching can open up completely new ways of experiencing music.

The aim of Sky Academy is to provide knowledge and inspiration to those who take guitar playing seriously and to help them reach a new plateau. The seminars are designed to open musicians' eyes to new possibilities and to trigger an awakening of the student's full potential and talent. Special emphasis is given to inspirational concepts rather than just technical means. Sky Academy is designed to teach particularly those things which are not normally touched upon in music teaching, but which provide a true gateway to mastery.
Tickets for the introductory seminars are available through the individual venues and can also be purchased at http://www.sky-academy-registration.com/.

The band is touring in support of their latest album Seven Deadly which was released earlier this year via Steamhammer/SPV. A complete list of dates can be found below.

Guitarist Vinnie Moore commented on the upcoming tour:

"It's been quite a while since we've toured in the USA and I'm really looking forward to it. We have not played here since the new record came out and it's going to be exciting to play some of the new tunes. And it is always great to see our awesome fans!"

Seven Deadly is an atmospherically dense fabric consisting of classy guitars, tight rock grooves and vocals which are unique to UFO. Ultimate-Guitar says of Seven Deadly: "UFO has re-entered back through Earth's atmosphere to bring the world another excellent, classic sounding album and it is one you must pick up."

UFO frontman Phil Mogg's thoroughly impressive vocal performance goes hand in hand with the awesome compositions on Seven Deadly. The classic rock of "Burn Your House Down" features all the important UFO strengths, "Mojotown" sees the musicians sound tougher than ever, and last but not least "Year Of The Gun" features a pointed reference to UFO's early days.

Iron Maiden & Dream Theater - North American Summer Tour!!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 4, 2010

DREAM THEATER TO SUPPORT IRON MAIDEN ON NORTH AMERICAN SUMMER TOUR

TO PLAY NYC’S FAMED MADISON SQUARE GARDEN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THEIR CAREER

New York, NY:
Prog rock/metal institution DREAM THEATER will spend their summer supporting Iron Maiden on the band’s month-long tour of major US and Canadian markets. The tour launches on June 9 and runs through July 20, and includes a stop at the storied Madison Square Garden in NYC, marking the first time in a lengthy and respected career that Dream Theater have played the world’s most famous arena.

This tour will mark another milestone in Dream Theater’s history, which continues to expand and evolve twenty-five years deep.

Of touring with Iron Maiden in North America, drummer Mike Portnoy said, “It is a bit of a dream come true for us. After 25 years together, at this stage in our career, there's honestly only three bands Dream Theater would consider opening for and Maiden is one of them. It is an absolute honor. Through the years, we've done many one-off shows with Maiden and they've almost all been overseas. It is very exciting to finally be doing a full tour with them and on our side of the pond no less. These are gonna be amazing shows that the fans won't want to miss. Up the f***ing irons!”

Playing MSG for the first time is also a huge accomplishment for the band and they are thrilled about the prospect. “Dream Theater has achieved so many dreams through the years, from playing the Budokan in Tokyo to Wembley Arena in London to Radio City Music Hall in NYC,” Portnoy recalled. “But the one remaining dream that has eluded us through all of these years was to play at Madison Square Garden. Well, on July 12, along with Iron Maiden, that dream will finally be fulfilled.”

Guitarist John Petrucci was equally stoked about the MSG play, saying, “I am unbelievably excited to be finally playing Madison Square Garden, and with the almighty Maiden to boot! They have been heroes to the band since the beginning and are iconic in our eyes. There is nothing like achieving success and recognition in your own country, in your own city. It's going to be an incredible night for sure.”

Portnoy has proof of this career-long dream, saying, “About a month ago my family and I were watching a video of my first band Intruder from back in 1983, and in the video before the show, I was interviewed and asked what my dream goal was. I responded ‘to play the Garden.’It took almost 30 years, but it’s surreal that I will now be able to check it off the list.”

Dream Theater’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings was released in 2009 and debuted at #6 on the Billboard Top 200 Sales chart.
