DesDemon Has Awakened
In a community of music where everything is about labels it’s becoming harder to stand out. I believe that it’s either rock or metal, but there are dozens upon dozens of sub-categories in both. One such sub-category, power metal, usually gets overlooked because some feel that bands like Iron Maiden have perfected it. In my years of being a fan of rock and metal I have come across bands that add their own unique touch in power metal and I continue to find more. The latest being DesDemon, who take power metal and add melody into it along with hints of black metal.
Their current album “The Awakening” is without a doubt the beginning of a long career in the rock and metal world. The powerful melodies and amazing guitar work puts them in a group with the likes of Kamelot and Nightwish but the addition of keyboards makes them stand out from the pack just a bit. Normally seeing a keyboard in the list of instruments in a rock or metal band hints at a power ballad, but not in this case. Nickolas Henroksen fits right in like a perfectly cut piece to a puzzle. His work adds an extra bit of magic that helps to create a certain “haunting factor” into each track without placing the band into the realm of electronica.
To single out one track on this album to show the true ability that DesDemon has is simple, just hit the second track on the album and just wait to be blown away. A Soul In Exile has everything from acoustic to pure power. The way in which Mistress Tina’s vocals and Lord Metadox’s guitar work sync up together makes you think that this band has been around for years. It’s obvious how well they know each other from just sound. And mixing acoustic with power is something most bands shy away from yet this track is done so well it makes you wonder why others haven’t done so.
I also have to give them credit for their over 11-minute epic In The Absence Of Light that closes out the album. In a time where the industry is about a quick hit along with how new they are the idea of an epic is something worth applauding. It has a steady driving rhythm to it that keeps your attention throughout and the guitar solos are well placed to keep the song moving. Not once during the track are you distracted by a unexpected or drastic change of pace or tempo.
For a first album DesDemon has surely proven that “The Awakening” is worth listening to from beginning to end. They have talent and drive that can take them far. If they keep going at this pace I’m sure it won’t be long before we see them side by side with some of the great melodic power metal bands.

Rock N Roll Hall Of Shame Strikes Again
For those of you who missed THE ASYLUM this past week or haven't heard through the grapevine, the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame has truly earned the name Hall Of SHAME with their latest choice for induction. It came out late Tuesday that KISS, who has been eligible for 10 years, was denied induction in favor of ABBA. This has got everyone from the die-hard rock and metal fans to the casual music fan scratching their heads and wondering what the hell is going on.
The big problem here is a bunch of people with a "we know better" attitude are cashing in on the name Rock N Roll. They are using that name as a general melting pot for EVERYTHING in the music industry and that's where they earn the use of SHAME instead of Fame because the whole thing is a big joke. The fact that The Beatles are in a building alongside Madonna under the name of Rock N Roll has had me beyond words for some time because we all know the closest Madonna has gotten to Rock N Roll was having sex in the backseat of a moving vehicle.
Now if they building was called the American Museum of Music then many of us would have no problem whatsoever with a mash up of all genres under one roof. A general name would make it easier to hear that Run-DMC or LL Cool J were going to be honored over a well established legendary rock band. But there's no marketing in a generalized name so they continue to make a mockery of the name Rock N Roll by adding ABBA; a disco group from the 70s. HELLO INDUCTION COMITTEE but there were fights in the streets during the 70s between fans of rock and fans of disco and inducting a DISCO group into a building the says ROCK N ROLL over it's front doors is not only a slap in the face to the genre and all the bands in the rock and metal world but it's a kick in the face to their fans as well. Especially when disco DIED as soon as the 80s started.
I was recently reading through some thoughts Eddie Trunk had regarding this situation and the big thing that he's hearing is that most people figured ABBA got chosen for induction because a lot of the great rock and metal bands are already inducted. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Here is a little list of rock and metal bands who are eligible but NOT in:
The H.O.F. made a big stink over opening an Annex here in the NY Area earlier this year only to announce earlier this month that said Annex wasn't working out financial and was being closed. And this was a surprise? Despite how much NY radio and MTV try to get the world to think that NY is a rap and hip-hop city the truth is NY is a rock and metal city to its core. Whenever a rock or metal band play a venue here it SELLS OUT and does so quickly. When Metallica announced earlier this year they'd play Madison Square Garden it sold out so fast they added a second date. Iron Maiden consistently sells out Madison Square Garden everytime it's on their tour schedule so it was no surprise to me that the H.O.F. Annex was ignored by the NY people as we know how much of a sham it is.
WE AS FANS need to let these idiots ruining to name of Rock N Roll know that, as Twisted Sister sang; "We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore!" I urge all fans of rock and metal to boycott EVERYTHING about the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame and to start bothering them to no end. We should all call and e-mail them and tell them how disgusted we are and that they need to either change the name to something general or start putting in the rock and metal bands and artists that belong in there and kicking out the pop and rap and hip-hop so that it can be known as the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame instead of its current Rock N Roll Hall Of SHAME.

My Return to the Airwaves
As most of you know I earned my rookie status as a DJ when I filled in for my brother Jay Scorpion on his show The Scorpion's Lair. And I enjoyed it, but with The Scorpion's Lair on hiatus I have an itch that needed scratching. Luckily that itch is getting scratched.
My friend The Sisco Kid, the best karaoke guy in NY, is starting up an internet radio station and yours truly will be a DJ. THOR web radio will be making it's official debut in January and will be broadcasting test runs all month starting next week.
And the crazy rolling rebel that I am will bring you to THE ASYLUM. Playing everything rock and metal and I mean EVERYTHING. From The Doors to Dimmu Borgir, Black Sabbath to Slayer, The Beatles to Beatallica and from indie bands as well. Keep your eyes open to all my sites for when I have a time slot worked out.
So get ready cause once your in THE ASYLUM there's no getting out.
